About arcMacro
Founded by an Economist Who Speaks PE
Combining experience in macroeconomics and alternative investing, we’re the independent chief economist private markets can trust
Our Founding Principle
The state of the economy and financial markets shapes outcomes for alternative investments.
Illiquidity is not a hedge against macro forces. No asset is an island.
Sound macroeconomic research and advice improves allocation strategy, supports investment decision-making, and drives enhanced portfolio performance.
Tailored to Private Markets
Alternative investors have been underserved by the research community.
| Economists follow the daily data and focus narrowly on macro aggregates. | Consultants follow the deal flow and miss the big picture. |
|---|
ArcMacro has adapted the economics toolkit for private markets, bridging top-down and bottom-up analysis to span the gap between research and strategy.
Our analysis delivers insights with the frequency, horizon and granularity that private markets need.

Dylan Smith,
Founder and Chief Economist
About the Founder
arcMacro was founded by Dylan Smith
Dylan’s experience uniquely positions him to bring world-class macroeconomic analysis to private markets.
Dylan cut his teeth as a Goldman Sachs economist, covering European and Emerging Market macro as a Vice President in the firm’s London office, before joining McKinsey & Co. Toronto as a diligence and strategy-focused consultant for private market clients.
This role revealed a high demand for macroeconomic guidance that was not being met by established advisors. Economists trained in public markets were not familiar with the low-frequency, long-horizon and highly granular needs of illiquid investors. Consultants did not specialize in taking the macro view.
Before arcMacro, Dylan was a Vice President and Senior Economist at Rosenberg Research, where he closely monitored the U.S. and Canadian economies and led the publication of in-depth special reports on global investing dynamics.
Dylan holds an MPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He has covered markets spanning North America, Europe, and Africa, and has lived and worked in Johannesburg, London, and Toronto.
